Chapter 41

Joy of Reunion

In a new environment, that which is familiar eases our fears.

Bethlehem wheeled her black armored SUV truck, deftly drifting it into an empty parking lot on a park that sat atop a hill overlooking a well-lit city. She had been joyriding with Iori for about an hour, showing off her driving skills along the way while asking him a plethora of questions about everything he had been up to. She’d also brought him up to speed on her own whereabouts since they had last seen each other back at Sacred Heart Orphanage almost six years ago.

“I can’t believe you can’t drive,” Bethlehem said, laughing as she shut the door to the driver side of her truck. “How do you all get around in. . . uhm. . . whatchamacallit? What’s your new home called again?”

“Optima,” Iori reminded her with a smile, gently shutting his passenger side door.

During their long ride, he’d told her about the beauty of the fabled Land of the Blind, and how it was unlike anywhere else on Earth. He’d also told her about his years of intensive mind and body combat training, his new friends Konnor and Aralia, and his new favorite sport, Dashers and Jumpers. Bethlehem had been so ensnared by it all, staring at him wide-eyed throughout the journey, often barely looking at the road ahead. “Would you believe me if I told you we didn’t need to drive there?”

“Iori dear, after all the things I’ve seen you do, not just earlier this evening, but even way back when we were kids, I’d believe anything you told me.”

“I guess so, but sometimes even I have a hard time believing some of the things I can do now. It all still feels surreal, although I finally understand how I’m able to do these things. And to answer your question. . . horses.”

“Horses? You’ve got to be kidding me, right? In 2037?”

Iori chuckled, nodding his head. “I’m serious, Betty. Don’t underestimate the power of man’s original method of transportation besides our own two feet. You’d have to experience it to believe it, but we’ve got steeds that move at speeds even faster than your fastest cars. And here’s the neat thing. . . unlike cars, horses are living beings, so we have real relationships with them, which is why naming them makes sense in our case.” He smiled, winking at Bethlehem as he teased his old friend for having named her SUV Betty Boop.

“We have relationships with all our animals actually, including lions, tigers, and bears,” he added with a smirk. “Oh, and we’re pretty fast ourselves, so running is always an option when your horse needs a breather.” He chuckled, noticing her jaw drop. “And it gets better. The more advanced minds among us can also use something we call Thought Travel. Basically, the way it works is that you imagine anywhere in the land you’d like to go, and well, you just find yourself there, as long as it’s a reasonable distance away.
